Summary of Prevail and Transcend Scenario in Radical Evolution free essay sample
In chapter six of Radical Evolution, author Joel Garreau shows through various interviews and examples that even though technology may be rising on an exponentially increasing Curve, humans may still be able to change the effects of technological advance in unpredictable ways. Deemed the Prevail scenario, it is also characterized by humans slowing down once-viewed inevitable change viewed as negative and speeding up positive change. Another great theme of the Prevail Scenario is its idea that technological advance will enable humans to acquire a better understanding of their society and nature. In addition to discussing the Prevail scenario, Garreau also discusses the possible change humans themselves may experience in chapter seven. He shows this possibility through a series of interviews and historic examples. The first person whom Garreau interviewed was Jaron Lanier, a computer scientist who coined the term ââ¬Å"virtual realityâ⬠. Garreau notes how Lanier ââ¬Å"does not see The Curve yielding some inevitable, preordained result, as in the fashion of the Heaven and Hell Scenariosâ⬠(195). This would suggest that even though Lanier believes that technology advances on an exponential Curve, he differs from past technology futurists, such as Ray Kurzweil and Bill Joy, in that Lanier believes the effects of technology are unpredictable and wild. Lanier believes that humans have the power to gain more understanding about human nature through advancing technology. Garreau describes Lanierââ¬â¢s predictions of the future: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦it would not be represented by smooth curves, either up or down, as in the first two scenarios. It would doubtless have fits and starts, hiccups and coughs, reverses and loops ââ¬â not unlike the history we humans have always knownâ⬠(196). Despite the chaotic nature of Lanierââ¬â¢s Prevail Scenario, the future of humans and technology would ultimately involve the humans being in control. In addition to interviewing Lanier, Garreau also mentions James P. Carse, professor of the history of literature at NYU. Garreau mentions Carse because the former once discussed his definitions of finite games and infinite games. According to Carse, finite games have very controlled settings. For example, there are beginnings and endings and the overall atmosphere is predictable. By contrast, infinite games have many surprises and these surprises cause the game to last forever. Tying this case back to the Prevail Scenario, Garreau notes how Lanier believes that ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËLife, liberty, and the pursuit of happinessââ¬â¢ is an infinite gameâ⬠¦Infinite games are the real transcendence games. They allow you to transcend your boundaries. They allow you to transcend who you areâ⬠(197). Garreau also discusses how Lanier views technological change as a way for humans to come together ââ¬â to forget their differences and become one interconnected society. So, the essence of Prevail is ââ¬Å"the search for a complex, evolving, inventive transcendenceâ⬠(Garreau, 200). Technology assists in this by helping humans come together. Lanier believes that human connectedness is a ââ¬Å"much more profound kind of ramp [than Heaven and Hell Scenarios]â⬠, which suggests that the Prevail Scenario will ultimately bring about the most interesting and meaningful future. In his discussion of the Prevail Scenario, Garreau also clarifies the event by drawing on examples from past movies and literature. Garreau gives examples from the biblical Exodus, the novel Huckleberry Finn, and in the movie Casablanca. In all of these works, Garreau shows how various characters, against all odds, struggle against various external forces that in the end help shape a character or a group of charactersââ¬â¢ minds for the better. This moral improvement is one of the major subjects of Lanierââ¬â¢s Prevail concept. Near the end of the chapter, Garreau concludes that the Prevail Scenario cannot be predicted. It is notable for its uncertainties, resilience, and diversity of ideas. However, the unifying theme in Prevail rests on the fact that humans will ultimately rise to greater understanding and morality while undergoing a journey of compassion and sacrifice. Garreau emphasizes this scenario by quoting Faulknerââ¬â¢s famous saying that ââ¬Å"man will prevail ââ¬Ëbecause he has a soul, a spirit capable of passion and sacrifice and enduranceââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (qtd. in 209). Gareau expands on the concept of the development of human nature in the chapter seven. Through a series of interviews and examples, Garreau attempts to explain and clarify what it means for humans to transcend and how technological advance will have an impact on that transcendence. Garreau starts out the chapter with an explanation that throughout human history, humans have been changing and evolving, with examples such as fire and writing. Then, Garreau describes the way human nature is being changed: ââ¬Å"Even the least educated among us is not raised by wolves, feral and wild. He grows up shaped by contemporary humans who own television, who have been shaped by modern societyâ⬠(237). This quote further suggests that human nature may be impacted the advancing GRIN technologies. To examine this possibility, Garreau interviewed Nick Bostrom, co-founder of the World Transhumanist Association. Bostrom shows his agreement with human transcendence by asserting that ââ¬Å"Technological progress makes it harder for people to ignore the fact that we might actually change the human natureâ⬠(qtd. in Garreau, 242). Garreau also brings up the topic of civil disruption from such enhancement. As discussed in the Hell chapter, the topic of technological advancement carving up human society into the Enhanced, the Naturals, and the Rest and having civil strife ensue is always a big topic. To gain insight on this topic, Garreau interviewed Gregory E. Pence, a professor of philosophy at the University of Alabama. Pence explains to Garreau that in order for technological enhancement to be successful, its use must be voluntary, for fear that government control of these technologies could create a form of eugenics. To add to this thought, Lee M. Silver, professor of molecular biology at Princeton, noted that life was unfair. He explained that some people, such as athletes, are just born with better genes which give them their enhanced abilities. Though Bostrom also agrees that such inequalities occur, he also notes that there may not be civil strife because of it. To show his ideas of the workings of civil tranquility, Bostrom observes that ââ¬Å"The reason we donââ¬â¢t have tall people conspiring against little people, or vice versa, is that there is no obvious cutoff point, and itââ¬â¢s just one continuum living in the same worldâ⬠(qtd. in Garreau, 245). So, Bostromââ¬â¢s discussion suggests that even though technological advancement may create some inequality in society, there would be many stages of enhancement, making the gap between the Enhanced and the Rest closed. To further elucidate on Bostromââ¬â¢s views, Christine L. Peterson, president of the Foresight Institute, says that ââ¬Å"The analogy is to entities more powerful than humans, like government and corporations. We come up with checks and balances. We always protect weaker members of society against those who want to push them alongâ⬠(qtd. in Garreau, 246). Peterson, like Bostromââ¬â¢s views on transcendence, views that in technological advancement, ââ¬Å"The goal is peaceful coexistence among traditional humans, augmented humans and machine-based intelligencesâ⬠(qtd. in Garreau, 246). Bostrom and Petersonââ¬â¢s discussions on the subject of Transcendence so far suggests that this advancement is not an emphasis on equality, but rather an emphasis on better morality and greater understanding of human nature in the future. To show the possibility of transcendence, Garreau interviews William Calvin, a University of Washington theoretical neurobiologist. She explains to Garreau that during human prehistory, humans had far lower physical and mental stature and were bound to the jungles. This was because proto-humans could not run very quickly or think very cleverly. Calvin then explains that one day, a very hungry proto-human hits a small animal with a rock. This scene set off a chain of events, which resulted in the proto-human being more nourished and a more connected brain, which resulted in him having babies with bigger brains. This led to more advancements, such as the development of language and fire. Garreau suggests that such an example of human evolution may also occur in the future because of advancing GRIN techniques. Garreau concludes the chapter by remarking that humans may evolve to bear better understanding and tolerance through technological advance. Garreau shows this phenomenon by reflecting on his own experiences with religious and cultural events. He reflects on how these events have an uncanny ability to bring people together in a close way. Then, Garreau remarks: ââ¬Å"If we are embarking on a path in which we stand to transform ourselves more than at any brief period in our speciesââ¬â¢ time on Earth, we are creating new critical moments. Perhaps we might start formally marking the occasionsâ⬠.

Strategy & Leadership Cisco Manages
Question: Describe about the Cisco manages contradictions that drive growth and profit for Strategy Leadership? Answer: Introduction The implementation of this hardware in the company may have an adverse effect if the prerequisites for that particular are not being checked before the installation. The major problem that arises is it is a time consuming procedure as different engineers use different equipments for installation (Davidson, 2011). This document will provide with an outline to overcome this situation of high time consumption and other related issues that are being faced during installation. As, the demand is rising in the recent days so to maintain the demand and supply chain proper measures should be taken to solve the issues of installation of the hardware. Review of Process The current process that is being adapted for the installation of this hardware is very slow due to the inefficiency of the engineers. So, as to speed up this process the technical group can be divided into three sets of engineers like freshers, experienced in the industry and experts for this particular process (Kowalik, 2014). The process of analysis was done from the review of the customers and the report of the sales department which depicted that the economic condition of the company has degraded over the years. From the previous researches, it is found that with the increase in complaints there is also increase in demand and proper measures should be taken to eliminate errors that could hamper the growth of the company. The implementation of this hardware in the company can slow the business process of the company and hamper the business continuity. The other issues that can persist apart from the installation time particularly in respect to this hardware is its compatibility w ith the hardware and software being used by the company (Makarov, Ostanin Vaitkov, 2014). Also, there is an issue of memory management to install the hardware as t may require a large amount of memory else will slow down the processing speed of the hardware thus slowing down the business continuity. Another problem that may arise is the system crash or the router crashes that can happen due to many unavoidable circumstances like reboots or reloads and bus error crashes. Thus it is important to detect and solve the issues that may prevent the continuity of the business in an organization (Ogheneovo, 2014). Report Analysis and Study The report was designed on the basis of a discussion conducted with a sales team of an organization that helped to identify the major problems that were being faced by the team. According to the statistics provided by the sales team, the sales have increased to a remarkable rate but as the increase in sell there also has been increase in complaints. This report showed that there are both advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of the hardware. So, as to maintain the demand and supply chain accurate measures have to be taken to prevent the discontinuity in the business process. The implementation of this particular series of router requires an expert team of technicians who have been working in the installation for years. The below mentioned chart shows increase in sales but the original fact that lies behind is the decreasing customer attraction due to the problems arising during the installation (Wang, Zhang Sun, 2014). The process of installation is slow in respect to o ther equipments or other router vendors. This is the most important fact that has to be kept in mind to improve the quality of business and retain the growth of the organization. As seen, during the first two years the sales was low due to the fact it was not understood by the customers and as the awareness grew the sales also increased effectively (Wilson, 2010). Recommendation This part of the document focuses on the methods that can be used to overcome the problems that arise from the installation of the new hardware in the company. The recommendations to solve the above discussed problems can be divide into following points: Proper human resource This can be done by appointing of proper technicians like fresher or experienced who could do the installation in the proper manner. Assessment of requirements This can be done by evaluating the software or hardware required prior to the installation. Detection of error messages Proper error decoding tools should be used by the customers. Identification of the issue There should be a technical team appointed in the company and contract should be made with the installation vendor for 24 hours support.Collection of error logs The system logs for error messages should be collected for proper identification of the problem. System Crashes or router reboots This may happen due to a bug or error in any programs that are being run in the system and the error log should be forwarded to the technical team for further analysis. Thus, the problems that arise due to installation of the hardware can be resolved by the following methods for continuity in the business process (Zhang, Yin, He Zhong, 2011). Conclusion This must be considered as an important aspect for business continuity and to resolve the problems arising during the installation. The methods in which the problems can be resolved are proper management of the technical staffs involved in the installation process. As well as keeping a regular backup of the total information system that is being used by the company. And the most important thing is to check the software or hardware requirements and whether the available memory will suffice with requirements for installation. So, during the process of redesign to implement this hardware the technical, economical and beneficial factors should be kept in mind for the continuity in the business process. References Cass, S. College Writing - Sample Argumentative Essay
College Writing - Sample Argumentative EssayCollege students are regularly asked to prepare an argumentative essay for an exam. Here are some tips to help you in your essay writing. The most important advice you can give a student preparing a sample argumentative essay is to make sure that the piece has structure. Structure is essential if you want your reader to read your essay and immediately know what they are supposed to think about. If you do not provide them with a structure in your argument, then they will find it difficult to make heads or tails of your argument.Be careful not to list all the details too quickly. Even though you should list as much information as possible, too much detail in the beginning of your argument may leave your reader confused. The best way to write a sample argumentative essay is to summarize and then add more details as necessary.Grammar is an essential part of the writing process. A grammar checker will be invaluable to help you check your work for errors. A grammar checker will help you catch all the grammar mistakes, and they will also help you catch the spelling mistakes, too.Students should learn how to express their emotions clearly in their argumentative piece. When you get to this part of the essay, it is important to be objective about your argument. If you feel strongly about something, then you should voice that emotion in your essay, without allowing yourself to make up facts.Be careful when you choose a theme. Some students may decide to use a theme as the basis of their argument. However, it is important to realize that themes are usually not meant to be the basis of an essay, so keep this in mind before you decide to use a particular theme. Finally, the right person to ask for help with writing your essay is your mother or father. While writing is important, it is also important to have others speak to you and tell you what to avoid. This way, you will not do something that you may regret later on.It is not hard to write a sample argumentative essay for college, especially if you learn from someone who has already written such essays. Write your essay not only well but well!
Article Related To Cultural Pluralism Example
Article Related To Cultural Pluralism Example Article Related To Cultural Pluralism ââ¬â Book Report/Review Example Cultural pluralism and its realities 28 May Summary In the article, ââ¬Å"Japanese International Female Experience of Discrimination, Prejudice, and Stereotypes,â⬠Bonazzo and Wong (2007) examined the experiences of discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes of Japanese students. They interviewed four Japanese international female college students who came from a predominantly white university. Findings showed that they experienced overt forms of discrimination and prejudice, stereotyping because they are Asian, stereotyping because they are Japanese, and they mainly coped with discrimination through avoidance. These participants were amazed that modern Americans had backward knowledge of and attitudes to Asians and the Japanese. Personal OpinionI believe that this article shows that racial prejudice and discrimination continue to exist in modern American society. The two kinds of stereotyping, both ââ¬Å"positiveâ⬠and ââ¬Å"negative,â⬠hurt the prejudiced group. F or instance, the participants felt that as Asians, they were stereotyped as ââ¬Å"overachievers.â⬠This might create pressure on them, which will only stress them further, instead of inspiring them to study hard, or to demonstrate their individualities. Furthermore, what if they are not overachievers? What if some Japanese are actually gifted in sports and prefer being better in volleyball than getting Aââ¬â¢s in school? Prejudice does nothing positive for these people, because we erase the ability for people to have identities that are separate from the stereotypes we ascribe to them. We cannot promote cultural pluralism in our lives, if we hold racial prejudice in our thinking and emotions. We should treat people as individuals and not assume that stereotypes apply to all.Relation to ClassThis article is related to our class and concepts, because it shows that racism exists in the United States. It comes from prejudice about people, which are preconceived judgments about people with similar characteristics. Prejudice can result to hidden or overt discrimination, both of which are bad for society, because they divide people, instead of motivating them to interact with one another. Discrimination can also be physically and/or emotionally damaging. People who discriminate turn into bullies who hurt the ââ¬Å"other.â⬠They are also harmed because they do not take advantage of diversity, such as learning from these differences. People who experience discrimination are particularly harmed, because they feel threatened and anxious. They are forced to acts of silence or violence, because discrimination demeans their identities. This article, hence, portrays the concepts of prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping, which are attitudes that do not co-exist with a culturally pluralistic society. Lines and Angles in SAT Math Prep and Review
Lines and Angles in SAT Math Prep and Review SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Knowing your lines and angles is crucial for mastering SAT and is one of the foundational steps of geometry. Before you can tackle some of the more complex multi-shape problems that often appear towards the end of the test, youââ¬â¢ll need to know just how to solve for all your missing angle measures. Almost without fail, there will be exactly two problems on any given SAT on lines and angles (note: these problems are distinct from questions on lines and slopes, which are covered in a separate guide). Though this is a small percentage of the test in and of itself, line and angle knowledge provides the backbone for other geometry problems and so should be ranked high on your studying priorities. This will be your complete guide to lines and angles on the SATwhat they are, how youââ¬â¢ll see them on the test, and how to solve these types of questions to maximize your points on test day. Properties of Lines and Angles Before we get into how lines and angles function, letââ¬â¢s take a second to define what these terms mean. A line is a completely straight marker, meaning it has no curvature. It can either have termination points (and will be called a ââ¬Å"line segmentâ⬠) or go on infinitely. Its degree measure is always 180à °. Parallel lines are two or more lines that are a set distance apart (equidistant) and never meet. They travel in the same direction continuously. Perpendicular lines meet each other at 90 degree angles. An angle is the meeting of two lines. The measure of how they meet is expressed in degrees, and the point at which they intersect is called the angleââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"vertex.â⬠Line and Angle Equalities Most of what youââ¬â¢ll need to know about lines and angles on the SAT is when and how they will be equal or supplementary to one another. Equal angles (or lines) are angles (or lines) that have the same measurement. Supplementary angles are angles that add up to 180 degrees. Because all these angles form a straight line and a straight line equals 180 degrees, the three angles are supplementary. Opposite Angles When two (or more) lines intersect, they form a series of opposite angles. Angles that are exactly opposite will always be equal to one another. Now letââ¬â¢s look at an opposite angle SAT problem. Here, you can see that the lines l and k intersect such that the sum of angles p and x make an angle that is exactly opposite angle m. This means that, when we add together angles p and x, their sum will be equal to angle m (because opposite angles are equal). 25+x=40 x=15 So our final answer is A, 15. Opposite Interior Angles When there are two parallel lines that are crossed by another line (called a transversal), the angles on alternate interiors will be equal to one another. And the angles on the same side of the transversal line and the same side of their respective parallel lines will also be equal. That may be difficult to picture, so letââ¬â¢s look at a diagram: (Note: when you are told that two lines are parallel on the SAT math section, the problem will almost always involve opposite interior angles in some way.) Now letââ¬â¢s look at an opposite interior angle SAT problem. We are told that lines l and m are parallel, so that means the three vertical lines are transversals. We can see that the angle to the far left is marked as 89 degrees and it is an opposite interior angle to angle r only. This means that r=89 degrees, as opposite interior angles are equal. So our final answer is A, r. Typical Line and Angle Problems Almost every line and angle problem is given to you as a diagram problem. You will be presented with a series of givens and then told to find a missing value of some kind. Almost always, this requires multiple steps and the use of multiple pieces of line/angle knowledge. For instance: This is a very typical line and angle problem, so letââ¬â¢s go through it. We are told that angle f is 85 degrees. This means we know that angle b is also 85 degrees because it is opposite f and opposite angles are equal. We are also told that c is 25 degrees. This means that g must also be 25 degrees because it is opposite angle c. And finally, we know that a line equals 180 degrees. This means that, in order to find angle a, we can say: a+25+85=180 a+110=180 a=70 So our final answer is C. As we said before, this question is representative of most line and angle problems youââ¬â¢ll see on the test. Based on your givens, you must use your knowledge of opposite angles (opposite angles are equal) and your knowledge of the degree measure of a line (a line is 180 degrees) in order to put together all the clues and solve your problem. The other kind of line and angle problem you may see will involve triangles. In these questions, you must not only put together multiple pieces of angle knowledge, but triangle knowledge as well. Generally, you will not need to know more than the fact that all the interior angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees, but check out our guide to SAT triangles if you are rusty on your triangle geometry(coming soon!). Because we are told that lines l and m are parallel, we can guess that our answer likely has something to do with opposite interior angles. We also know that, to equal 180 degrees, our angles must either complete a triangle or a straight line. With those clues in mind, letââ¬â¢s go through our answer choices. Option A gives us k,n, and r. We know from our opposite interior angles that k and r are equal, and that n, s, and t are equal, but this information helps us complete neither a triangle nor a straight line. We can eliminate answer choice A. Answer choice B gives us k,p, and s. Again, from our opposite interior angle knowledge, we know that k and r are equal, and that n, s, and t are all equal. Because s=n, we can form a triangle with our given angles. And because s=t, p is given, and opposite interior angle equalities means that k is equal to the unknown angle counterclockwise above t, then our known values can also form a straight line of 180 degrees. Whether they are forming a triangle or a straight line, we can find 180 with the given angles of k,p, and s. We can stop here; we found our solution. Our final answer is B. You can see here that the lynchpin for solving the problem was in your understanding that opposite interior angles are equal. And though you could have also found your required 180 degree measurement using a straight line (as we did above), it was faster to use the triangle. For both ease of problem solving and knowing how to solve the more complex geometry problems, your knowledge of lines and angles should definitely be supplemented with triangle study. So donââ¬â¢t forget to brush up on your SAT triangles!(coming soon!) Let's take a look at the tips for unlocking SAT angle problems. Tips for Solving a Line and/or Angle Problem As you saw in the earlier examples, most line and angle problems require you to go through multiple steps before you find the right answer. And most of the time, you must solve the question piece by piece in order to unlock the final solution. As you go through this process, keep in mind these three tips: 1) Write in your givens If you are given a diagram in which your givens are NOT written in, then write them in yourself! Sometimes, seeing the numbers on the page can make all the difference in the world between a difficult problem and an easy one. Youââ¬â¢ll also be far less likely to mix up your numbers and variables if you keep your work on the page instead of in your head. 2) Work from your givens to find the next puzzle piece Sometimes, it can be tricky to know where or when or in what order to work through a problem. Take a moment to find what you can before you worry about how to go forward. If you have opposite angles, write in the measure of the angle opposite you're given. If you have angles that make a straight line, find the value of the missing variable. Immediately find the missing pieces that you can, and that information will often lead you straight to your solution. 3) If necessary, use plugging in answers or plugging in numbers If you find yourself stuck (or there is literally no other way to solve the problem), then whip out your PIA or PIN knowledge. Sometimes the process can be slower than a straight solve, but these strategies will almost always get you where you need to go and so can be worth the extra seconds. Ready, set...go! Let's test that newfound knowledge! Test Your Knowledge 1) 2) 3) 4) Answers: A, D, A, D Answer Explanations: 1) This is a question that cannot be solved without using plugging in answers. We can see that x, y, y, and y all make up a straight line (which equals 180 degrees). So let us express that as an equation. x+3y=180 Now, we have no other information (other that that x and y are both integers), from the problem, so now we must look to the answers. Let us start with the answers that end in 0 as those are easiest to work with. If these do not work, then we can eliminate them and try the answers that end in 5. Letââ¬â¢s begin by plugging in our middle value, C, in place of x. If x=40, then: 40+3y=180 3y=140 y=46.67 140 is not evenly divisible by 3, so we can eliminate answer choice C. Let us now try answer choice A, x=30. 30+3y=180 3y=150 y=50 When x=30, both x and y are integers. This fulfils our question premise and so is our correct answer choice. Our final answer is A, x=30 2) Let us solve this question by finding the values of all the angles we can. Angle a is opposite the 60 degree angle, and so angle a=60. We can also see that angles a and b are supplementary, as they form a straight line. This means that: a+b=180 60+b=180 b=120 We can also see that angle e is supplementary with the 70 degree angle. So: e+70=180 e=110 Now, we need only find angles c and d. From our knowledge of triangles (coming soon!), we know that the interior degrees of a triangle add up to 180 degrees. So angle c must be: c+60+70=180 c=50 And because c and d form a straight line and are therefore supplementary, we can find angle d by saying: c+d=180 50+d=180 d=130 Which means, that of all the degree measurements that we found (a=60, b=120, c=50, d=130, and e=110), angle d is the largest. Our final answer is D, d. 3) Because we are told that lines l and m are parallel, we can guess that this problem likely involves opposite interior angles. Because we are familiar with our opposite angles and our opposite interior angles, we can see that angles s, u, and t are all equal. We can also see that angles r and s are supplementary, as they form a straight line. And if r=91, then let us find angle s: r+s=180 91+s=180 s=89 We already said that angles s, u, and t are equal, so they are all equal to 89 degrees. For the final step, we must add t and u. So: t+u = 89+89=178 So our final answer is A, 178. 4) In this question, we are working with multiple variables. Luckily, we can find our value for x and then use it to find our y value. The angle measures 4x and 2x make a straight line, so they are supplementary. This means that: 4x+2x=180 6x=180 x=30 Now, we can find y by using our x value in one of two wayseither because angle y is opposite (and therefore equal) to angle 2x or because angle y makes a straight line with 4x (and is therefore supplementary). So we can say that: y=2x y=2(30) y=60 Or, we can say that: y+4x=180 y+4(30)=180 y+120=180 y=60 Either way, our answer is y=60. So our final answer is D. Whoo! Your brain is on fire (in a purely metaphorical and non-lethal way, of course). The Take-Aways Lines and angles are often simpler than you may think. Advertising Analyse an advertising campaign for any product or Coursework
Advertising Analyse an advertising campaign for any product or services - Coursework Example any was able to cut a niche in the market since it is molded in the counterculture phenomenon and it is characterized by innovative and revolutionary practices that has shaped its uniqueness, successes, strategies, products identity, and above all, its failures (Gallo, 2013). In 1990ââ¬â¢s the failures of Appleââ¬â¢s strategies and brand loyalty was fast deteriorating. The company had lost millions in profits and jobs had been lost as the company tried to cut spending on personnel. Their popularity had further been worsened by their previous advertisement campaign which was perceived by the market to be way below their expectations. Furthermore, there was no single practical strategy that was working for the company at that time given that even their technological advancement was not ahead of other technological companies. Steve Jobs, the cofounder of Apple, returned to the company in 1997, displeased at the rate in which the company was sinking in his absence. Under his leadership, a new advertisement campaign was devised to restore the glory of the company, restore its market share and encroach into new markets for the personal computers. In the technological industry, especially where electronics are concerned, consumers were no longer interested in the basic features or acquiring products that everyone else has. Consumers wanted high quality products that are differentiated to define, not only what they say, but also to be the brand that defines what they drive, what they wear and what they possess. They wanted technological products that fit their lifestyles and add to the psychological meaning of what they possess already. Appleââ¬â¢s products gave the consumers products that had the potential to define their lives and needed an advertisement campaign that reminded them that (Yeshin, 2006). Appleââ¬â¢s Think Different campaign was pioneered by Jobs in an attempt to restore the counter-culture brand image that the company had lost. The transformational shift of the

Risk Tolerance & need to diversify Research Paper
Risk Tolerance & need to diversify - Research Paper Example Large Company stocks, also referred to as blue-chip stocks or large-cap stocks, refer to the stocks of large publicly traded companies (Leach and Melicher, 2011, p.249). Long term corporate bonds in most cases refer to debentures which offer a higher yield compared to other investments but investors of such bonds are prone to interest risk and credit risk. Long term government bond refers to those bonds which mature in more than 10years. US Treasury bill is a transferable debt contract issued by the US Government that ensures trust and fulfillment of claim of receivable return at the end of the period. Such investment is made for a period of one year or less than one year, and is exempt from local and state taxes (Boston Institute of Finance, 2005, p.105). If my decision is to invest in the current portfolio of mix of stock, bonds and treasury bills in equal proportions, despite of the divisions between fixed earnings and volatility of earnings of the securities, the entire portfolio would give an average (avg.) expected return of 14.78%, with risk of 8.88% associated with it, as per time horizon and risk tolerance. Impact on future Investment Decisions The decision of future investment and formation of portfolio with diversification depends on the characteristics of the investor, the characteristics of the securities in the portfolio and its risk return trade-off which will determine the proportion of investment to be made in each security, observation of the historical performance of the securities, and the time horizon of investment. An investor can be broadly classified into risk averse investors, risk prone investor, and risk neutral investor, based on their degree of risk preference. Risk averse investors prefer security to earnings than risk accompanied by high returns. Such investors prefer to invest more in bonds and treasury bills which will carry a guarantee of return at the end of period with low risk; as such investors try to avoid risks. Some inve stors who prefer to bear risk and avail the high return associated with it belong to a class of risk prone investors. Such investors prefer to invest in risky securities with high returns, such as equity, so as to avail the benefit arising out of it. There is another class of investors known as risk neutral investors, as they do not make any differentiation between debt and equity and opt to invest equal proportion in each (Haslem, 2009, p.158). If I am a risk averse investor, I shall prefer maximum investment in treasury bills and bonds, as this will assure a fixed percentage of returns at the end of the period with low risk associated with it. Thus, 80% of the investment is to be made in treasury bills and bonds, and 20% in company stocks. The proportion of investment in long-term corporate bonds differs from long term government bonds and US Treasury bills, as because long term corporate bonds is a bit risky than the others. If I am a risk neutral investor, I shall prefer equal p roportion of investment in both stocks and bonds (i.e. bonds and treasury bills), with an expectation that if return from stock is higher I shall benefit from my investment, and, if investment in stock fails to provide return, then benefit earned from the fixed income bearing securities would help to offset some portion of the loss. If I am a risk prone invest
